    Copying Prohibited

Hello, I have Vista Ultimate x86 with TV Pack installed. This problem just started last week. All of the sudden I'm getting errors in the middle of broadcasts saying "Copying Prohibited - The boradcaster prohibits this content from being copied. You can only play this content on the same computer on which it was recorded" The thing is, that I am! And this happens on PBS shows, locals news, and happens right in the middle of the broadcast as I'm watching it. I've updated my video drivers to the latest. Not sure what else I can do. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Re: Copying Prohibited

I assume you use DCT cablecard tuners...  Do you have any extenders?  If so, can you watch tv on the extenders?  I made the mistake of installing a different audio decoder a couple of weeks ago and started getting the same problem as you.  Are you using the default audio and video decoders and not trying to use things like ffdshow and ac3 filter?  The 3rd party decoders break the DRM chain and you will get this error...  I am sure there are many other things that can cause it though, too...  Stupid DRM...  I can't wait for the cablecard DRM to be loosened!

No! I'm not using cablecard! I have a dual analog tuner card with basic cable (just network channels) and an ati atsc tuner.. I'm having problems with the shows that are recording on the analog cable tuners! I noticed that for some reason the guide says that the shows are copyright protected. but these are local news shows! and daytime tv shows! i think something is wonky somewhere.

I started getting the same thing this weekend. My daughter was trying to watch a show called Samuri Girl on ABC Family, channel 33 here in Denver CO. We could watch half the show and then it would stop, complaining about Copy Protection.

I too am running Vista with TV Pack 2008, 64 bit if it makes any difference.

So far the problem has been limited to this show only, but we got it on three different episodes.

Exact same thing here. I get it part way through some recordings from History Channel, and I also got it on a bunch of other analog cable channels including PBS the other morning. It comes and goes, but once a recording has it in there, it won't play back from that point on (or rewind) no matter what. All I could do with the two shows (Ice Road Truckers) was delete them. Nothing else would work. I do have ffdshow installed, but I don't think it is that. I will try uninstalling it just in case, but it is sporadic and I don't think I will be able to nail it down to anything easily unless an admission of guilt from the tuner driver/company or microsoft comes out. Are any MS people looking into this?

    Re: Copying Prohibited

Thank you! I thought I was the only one having this problem. And it seems like it's happening more each day- or maybe it's just getting increasingly annoying..The weird thing is that I've had TV Pack installed since it leaked and haven't experienced any problems of this sort until a week or two ago. And again, I can watch a show, but then right in the middle it will cease from playing, displaying the error message. I feel the guide is somehow incorrect in listing MANY more shows as being copyright protected when they aren't. I don't know if this is related, but I've also had to reset my guide listings many times and redo the TV Setup because listings would download for my ATSC tuner, but not my basic cable analog tuner. I would then reset the guide, and then the problem would be reversed. Thanks again.

    Re: Copying Prohibited

I have the same problem on my HTPC.  I have two tuners, both coaxed to basic cable, a dell Angel USB tuner and a ati 550 pci-express.  Is there a way to look into the reg and see if there is a specific value that sets the default tuner?  I would like to see if switching tuners solves the issue.

    Re: Copying Prohibited

Err.. a friend of mine who has the Pack on a clean install (he was tired of waiting for the ATSC EPG to get fixed) said he has the same problem on viewing some plain jane recordings he made before performing the install. One analog tuner and two ATSC.

    Re: Copying Prohibited

I have a feeling that it's only affecting analog tuners. I forget the model of mine but I have a Hauppauge dual tuner that came with my HP Z555. I can record and watch the same show over ATSC and it will not have any copyright protection on it..

    Re: Copying Prohibited

I too am having this problem for the past week. It seems to come randomly. I'm not even recording. I'm watching live TV. Yet I am being told by VMC that "The broadcaster prohibits this content from being copied. You can only play this content on the same computer on which it was recorded." Whats the deal? Who do I contact at microsoft to get this resolved?

    Re: Copying Prohibited

I notice it happen to me for the OSU vs USC game.  At 8pm it flipped to the bluescreen that cried about copyright. I'm thinking it has to do something with the cable signal, but also something in the computer is tripping off this message.  I wasn't recording it or anything.  Perhaps the auto record part so you can rewind tripped it off?  I'm going to investigate it later this week to see if its tied to the tuners or not.

    Re: Copying Prohibited

Well thats it for me. Random errors about copy protection has finally pushed me over the limit. What good is a media center if it doesnt let you watch anything? I'm off to give sage a try. Hopefully I wont be back.
