I have a new home-built machine with an audio issue in Media Center.  When using HDMI audio on my receiver, DVD's will play for about 1 or 2 seconds, but with skipping sound, then I get the video error "Files needed to display video are not installed or not working correctly".
I've confirmed that the issue occurs when playing any item with 5.1 surround sound in Media Center.  Items play fine in other media players.  If I set the HDMI sound to stereo, the issue goes away.  It only occurs when using HDMI audio with 5.1 surround sound.  I've updated the audio, video, and TV tuner drivers to the latest available from the manufacturers, but it didn't help.   

This is a new computer.  Here are the specs:

AMD Athalon II X2 250 3 Ghz CPU
4 Gb Corsair DDR2 800 MHz RAM
Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-2250 Tuner Card
LG Blu-Ray drive
Onkyo receiver with HDMI pass-thru

This motherboard has an Optical audio-out, and if I use the Optical to send the sound to the receiver, everything works fine.  Everything plays, great sound, no issue.  But if I try to use HDMI for audio and video, I can only play items if they are in stereo.
I want to get away from the Optical audio because when I play blu-ray disks in the PowerDVD player, the sound cuts out for about 1/2 second when it switches chapters.  Over HDMI, both sound and audio work perfectly in PowerDVD.
So now, if I watch items in Media Center, I need to configure the audio to go through the Optical cable.  If I want to watch a Blu-Ray, I need to re-configure the computer to use HDMI audio.  Very annoying.
Any help you can give would be much appreciated.  Thanks!

same here. let me explain my proccess.

I am a big fan of norton ghost.

1. I did a clean install. WMC works fine. cleaned everything.

2. made a ghost image.

3. Installed a driver. checked WMC if good, move on , if bad re-image hard drive.

4. This is the final verdict.: Windows 7 only shows HDMI as 2 channel.

5. Install ATI drivers. HDMI now shows 7.1, and works in all software (example powerDVD is fine)...BUT ...

WMC is the only one that crashes just like what you posted.

 

see the thread i linked to above. this is a known issue with WMC7. The workaround is to set your speaker output to 2-channel in the Windows sound properties. MS will have to write a fix for this to truely fix it.

"Two Channel" means stereo.  That's not 7.1 or 5.1, or surround sound at all.  Just stereo.  To me, that's not a good workaround. 

The workaround I used was to use an Optical cable to run the sound to my reciever.  That works pretty well.  If that's not an option, I would use analog cables.  You'll still get Dolby Surround sound that way.

I am satisfied to have wmc function in stero for very temporary solution. I just wish that ATI or Microsoft fix this issue soon.

my point was that Microsoft knows about the issue. It is an acknowleged bug with WMC7 and that Microsoft's workaround is to play HDMI through WMC is to configure the HDMI playback device in the conrol panel to stereo. After you do this you can still set WMC to 5.1 or 7.1 via the media center settings and you will get 5.1 or 7.1 audio out from WMC. I have tested this and it works fine with both QAM and DVDs to play 5.1 audio. I cannot test 7.1 as I only have a 5.1 system.

Well, I've corrected it on my computer and been able to keep my HDMI as 5.1 in windows sound.  The issue is within WMC and not with the sound or the WMP as the DVD's play fine in WMP, just not within WMC.  Therefore, I knew it was an issue within WMC and not codecs, drivers, etc.

I figured it was not those after I had done everything from upgrade/downgrade my video and audio drivers, install uninstall codecs, etc.  Nothing worked. 

Went back to my AVS forum site and found someone with a similar issue and a VERY simple solution.  I tried it and low and behold, it worked! All I had to do was disable the navigation sounds in WMC..... close WMC, restart and all the DVD's now play, granted no sounds when navigating WMC, but I'll take that. 

To disable it, open WMC, go to Tasks, settings, general, visual and sound effects and uncheck 'play sounds when navigating WMC'  back out, close and restart wmc.

Let me know if this works for anyone else. (I did not have to change the HDMI sound setting to stereo, I left it as 5.1)

I have tried all the above and still no joy!  This is a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate, fully patched, latest BIOS, system device firmware, etc.  I ran dxdiag and saved the results to see if anyone might have a clue why this is happening. 

I can not play DVD's or Netflix movies within WMC.  Outside of WMC, DVD's play fine in WMP and I can also watch Netflix movies in the browser.  I have the latest, Flash, Silverlight, Shockwave, Quicktime installed.  I have disabled my AV (Zonealarm Extreme Edition) and still no joy.  Tried alternate video/audio drivers, no joy.

When I attempt to play a Netflix movie, the Netflix menu comes up, allows me to browse, select a movie and after clicking play (or resume), the screen blanks, the WMC nav buttons at the top disappear giving a black screen, then the screen blinks white and the nav menu at the top reappears.  The mouse never goes off the screen.

When I attempt to play a DVD, I get the "Video error files needed to display video are not installed ..." message.

I know my computer is not a "new" one, but if WMP can play DVD's and Netflix movies, surely WMC should be able to.  After all they (WMP and WMC) are both Microsoft products.  Seems like Microsofts left hand doesn't know what the right hand can do!  Then again, maybe I can;t see the forest because of the trees either!  Any help will be appreciated as this is the wife's computer!

Holy cow.  I have been workign on this for a week.  I have spend over $100 on codec packages, third party DVD players, etc. etc.  Just turn off Navigation sounds.  Simply astounding.  But it worked.

This isn't an ATI issue. it also fails on Nvidia chipsets (mine). I think it is wholly microsoft. The fact that it works outside WMC is evidence in my view that it is not the video card.
