Cannot complete TV setup in Media Center 2005

    Cannot complete TV setup in Media Center 2005

    My computer is 1 1/2 years old, a Core 2 Quad with NVidia 8600 GT, running XP Media Center Edition, with SP3 and all updates.

    With the recent switchover from analog to digital, I thought I'd try Media Center 2005 (Rollup 2), but when I go into " Settings|TV|Set Up TV Signal", I get the message:

    "UNSUPPORTED REGION
    The tuner hardware does not support the TV format for your region.  You may need to install different tuner hardware that supports the appropriate TV format."

    The TV tuner is SiliconDust HDHomeRun, and it works fine -- the setup & test software display a fine signal.

    What am I doing wrong?

    Unless I'm mistaken, The SiliconDust HDHomeRun is not an officially supported
    XP/MCE 2005 tuner, which would probably explain the error message you get
    during setup.
     
    I searched the MS knowledge base for a list of "Designed for XP/Media Center
    2005" hardware. But, it appears that it's no longer posted on their website.
     
    I have also read quite a few posts here on TGB from people who have "hacked" their
    system registry in order to get HDHR to work with Media Center, but once again,
    this seems to be a no-go for XP/MCE 2005 as the posts were by people using VMC.
     
    I wish I could be more helpful to you, but at least this will solve the mystery of why it
    doesn't install properly
     
    BTW, in most cases, whatever tuner you do install for use with WMC will require you
    to install a WMC specific driver and uninstall any/all standalone software & drivers that
    might already be running or installed.

    With MCE2005 you also need to have an analogue tuner fitted, even though you're not going to use it.

    Correct, I completely forgot about the analog tuner requirement!

    When I did my notebook WMC setup, by necessity I installed my Hauppague PVRUSB2, analog tuner alongside my Artec ATSC tuner & then I went in and unchecked all of my analog channels from the guide list & left the HD channels intact

    You could also, upgrade to either Vista or Win7 since there is no analog tuner requirement for those versions of Media Center.

    It seems to me that if Johnathan WANTED to upgrade to a new OS, he would.
     
    I may be off base here, but maybe he just wants to use what he has or is not interested
    in Vista or Win 7 or simply cannot afford  a new OS license or the requisite hardware
    upgrades that go along with it
     
    (all of which apply in my own case)
     
    Just my .02, YMMV

    Not only is an analog tuner required but also a video codec like the nVidia pure video codec.

    MPEG decoders from Cyberlink, Nero & Sonic are also compatible with MCE 2005

    Do you have all of the above installed?  Have you delegated which codec you want MC to use?  I've only tried the nVidia decoder, also installing Nero on my machine always seems be a little invasive.

    With the aid of the Microsoft Windows XP decoder checkup utility, I have designated the Cyberlink codec as my "default" for MCE as I've found it looks best with my particular hardware (Hauppauge WinTV PVR 2 tuner, ATI Radon x600 video card, Dell 1707FP monitor/w DVI interface, etc)

    And yep, you're right about the "invasive" nature of Nero. To combat this, my approach has been to go into services and set everything to the "manual" mode. This way I can launch each of the various Nero services as needed instead of running a bunch of unnecessary services at start up.
