Cumulative Update for Media Center TVPack for Windows Vista (KB966315)

Microsoft has released the June 2009 Cumulative Update for Media Center TVPack for Windows Vista (KB966315). It is currently available on Windows Update and is propagating to the Microsoft Download Center. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/966315 is also in the process of propagating and has information on the updates contained in the cumulative update.

This update addresses an issue where sometimes a blank blue bar appears on screen during live TV playback, increases the number of tiles supported on the top level of the Media Center Start Menu, addresses an issue with Media Center parental controls and Windows Media Player on Windows Vista x64 systems and addresses an issue in which the seek bar does not display correctly on some Media Center extensibility applications.

    Tim,

With TV Pack, should we install this update along with KB967632, or just this one? Both are showing up as applicable for my system.

Both. TVPack was an add-on pack, not a full footprint replacement. Some Windows Media Center components were not updated by TVPack and are serviced by the main Windows Media Center Cumulative Update. The TVPack Cumulative Update only includes updates to components released in the TVPack.

Installed both of these fixes (supplied by Windows Update) a couple of hours ago. I've since had two occurrences of "Video Error: Files needed to display video are not installed or not working correctly. " (one while watching live TV, one while watching a recording, on my Vista MCE 64 system.).

Never had these errors before. Coincidence?

If updates are being pushed out to VMC+ TV Pack, should I get rid of Windows 7 and roll back, specifically the lack of TV guide for UK DVB-S - will this be addressed first in VMC + TV Pack or
    Windows 7 (or Windows 8)

Were the only updates installed the Media Center updates or were video driver updates also installed?

Can you provide additional system info, including video adapter and current driver version?

    Tim:

It took me months to finally get my Vista Media Center working correctly. My worst decision was to install TV Pack.  It has caused me nothing but problems.  Tonight, I installed with great hopes, the cumulative updates for media center.  However, they failed to address the ongoing problems which I continue to experience.  Many channels display:

    Service is Unavailable

There is currently no TV signal detected for this channel.  The channel may be temporarily off-the-air, please try again later.

On the same TV, I also have a cable box connected so that my kids can watch on demand.  I can watch the very same channels which VMC says it cannot detect a signal.  Additionally, the news and other favorite shows which my wife and I record appear pixelated, stuttered and suffer from audio issues.  I am at a loss to figure out how to resolve these problems.  Please help!

P.S. I have an OEM, Dell XPS 420 with dual ATI all in wonder tuners.

The updates applied were the ones that Windows Update pushed out Tuesday (security updates for Vista x64, Word Viewer, malicious software removal tool, Works 9 and the cumulative MCE update and TV Pack update).

Video driver was not updated; video is ATI Radeon HD 4850 running the as-shipped driver 8.516.0.0 dated 12/1/2008.

System is 'stock' HP m9600t MCE Vista x64 which has had Vista SP2 applied (via Windows update). It came with the 'original' TV pack and Hauppauge HVR-1290 ATSC/QAM tuner.

As I said before, had no ocurrences of the error in prior usage (had system about 5 weeks), then 2 immediately after applying.
I did uninstall the TV Pack update and replayed the recording which had failed with the update and it played without errors; I've since used the system for several hours and have had no recurrence of the error (again, with the TV Pack update uninstalled).

I could try reinstalling and repro if there were some useful info to be gained.

You mentioned that the tuner on your machine is Hauppauge HVR 1290. Can you please check if the latest supported driver is being used for this tuner? For Vista/RTM/SP1/SP2, the “official” driver is the one on Windows Update. The PnPID for the 1290 appears to be PCI\VEN_14F1&DEV_8880&SUBSYS_85510070 (this can be found in Device Manager). The Windows Update site (http://catalog.update.microsoft.com) lists driver version 1.32.26337.0 from 12/2/2008 as being the latest.

Just did the updates on my Vista 32 bit system and I'm seeing this error as well. Was watching a recording through an xbox extender and went to stop playback. The first time I restared the playback it was fine and the second time I stopped and restarted I got the Video Error message mentioned above. Exiting MCE and restarting did fix it the first time but the second occurance forced a reboot of the computer. The third occurance the wife said to try another recording, which worked ok so I went back to the recording that had the error and it was ok again?

Anyway, Burd is not alone with this update causing the Video Error problem. This is on a 3-week old Vista install w/ TV Pack. Thanks for looking into this!

Yep - also getting  the "video wont play" bug on random recordings.

Also had a few issues last night whn a playback of a recording became unresponsive to play/pause/stop for a few minutes and has happend again since.

Vista 32 w/TV Pack and all update (not SP2).....about to go back to pre-latest updates when it all worked!

Oh, one thing was better! I can browse my music collection a lot quicker..but am happy to lose that and have the TV working properly again :-)

I reinstalled the TV pack service pack and will try again and let you know.

Full disclosure-- I did find a coax connection that seemed a little lose at one of the tuner inputs. Possibly the message can result from a corrupted signal?

Well my quoted post above didn't seem to pick up my question :)

If you get the Video Error message, if you wait a few seconds (~15-20 seconds) does playback resume?
