Linksys: “No Plans for Models to Replace” DMA2100/DMA2200

Silly me, I figured the fire sale on Linksys DMA2100 and DMA2200 Extenders over the past two months might indicate them getting ready to drop a new hardware revision on us, but sadly that doesn’t appear to be the case.  Consumer Electronics Daily is reporting that Cisco (eg. Linksys) “has no immediate plans” to replace the two Extender SKUs.  Cisco did note that a firmware update would likely be the next step.  When that update drops or what is included remains to be seen.

The DMA2100 has sold for a low of $59 at Dell.com a few week ago.  The average price now is about $125, which is nothing to turn up your nose at (unless they drop to $59 again).  Isn’t it amazing how the drop to a reasonable price seems to get more people on board with Extenders (hint, hint)?  How many of you purcahsed an Extender because of the recent sales?

What issues does Linksys need to focus on for their (hopefully) upcoming firmware update?

I picked one up at new egg when it dropped to $100
My only complaint is the slow boot time, but that may be as much of Microsoft's fault.

I got mine for $130 + free 250g hard drive ($50value at newegg) so I justified my 2200 to be $80.  Even then that was the absolute ceiling, and I had to have the free shipping.  In my mind, DMA2200 ...maybe $60 after tax/shipping.  2100 I wouldn't touch for more than $30.

I already had one, but I've picked up a couple more with the lower price point.  The most annoying thing for me is that the HW doesn't support the same transitions and graphics of the desktop or XBOX360, but that won't be fixed with a patch... The absolute biggest request I have seen which I would also like to see if magic packet support to allow PC sleep state to work properly.  That would be a huge plus.

My 2200 is a decent piece of hardware. I too got it with a 250 GB hard drive from the 'Egg. I first got the 2100 at Circuit City for $115. I wouldn't buy another one but the upscaling dvd player makes the 2200 worth it. What they definately need is more codec support. Having to convert all my files is a real PITA.

I got one a couple of weeks ago here in Ireland as soon as the price droped.

I'm loving it. I the loss of some menu transitions is a fair trade off for no fan noise.

They are still ridiculously expensive in Europe.  Around the 300 dollar mark the last time I checked.  This is really stopping Media Centre taking off in the UK

I think they'll pull the same garbage they did with the V1 models (wmce54ag)
Got the market warmed up, one firmware update then dumped it.
Thumbs down to Lynksys (Cisco).
How bout an update for those to allow digital TV (HD).

I bought one six months ago for $150 and just picked up a second one from Dell for $60.  Now I don't have enough tuners!  I guess I'll need to pick up another dual tuner card.

Hi, I'm new to the site and I have just purchased a 2200 in the sales, so yes it has converted me to the world of extenders!

For European / UK people, Dabs have the 2200 (£127) and 2100 (£97) in their sale:

I bought one from Dell a few weeks ago too, and I'm really disappointed that there's no means to do streaming (NetFlix or Blockbuster) without using plugins for Vista Media Center.  vmcNetFlix almost works, but it won't install now because it's looking for the older Neflix Movie Player instead of Silverlight during the install sequence.  There are few other plugins that will actually do anything to allow playing online videos via this or other extenders.  Disappointing to hear that Linksys isn't going to try to compete with the extenders that are fully-compatible with NetFlix and Blockbuster, etc.
